Church of San Juan, Batangas

Last May 22, 2016 our photography club visited the town of San Juan in Batangas. It’s famous for its beaches. No other than Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) chief Noelito M Pasco toured us to this wonderful, quiet town of San Juan.

We toured almost all the famous landmarks of San Juan and it’s local industries as well as the famous beaches of Laiya. I learned that the current Church of San Juan was originally built in Pinagbayanan before it was transferred in its present location at the heart of the town. We visited both sites.

There are two markers on the façade of the San Juan Church (in Batangas) and one of it reads:

Here’s my rough translation:

San Juan Church

Originally made from nipa and bamboo in Pinagbayanan,1843. It was separated from Rosario, 1848. The stone church was commissioned to build by Father Damaso Mojica, first Parish Priest, with the help of the town’s Principales under the leadership of Gobernadorcillo Felipe Salud, 1845. It was transferred to the present location in 189 and inaugurated the present stone church, under the sponsorship of Father Celestino Yoldi, Recollects, 1894. Temporarily administered by the Capuchin Priests, 1904. San Juan de Bocboc was changed to Bolboc by means of Law Number 2390, 1914. It became San Juan de Nepomuceno in the early years of 1920.

There’s a museum besides the church and here are the things you can find there.

Church of Pinagbayanan

In this location called Pinagbayanan, the Church of San Juan was first built, which is made of bamboo and nipa, 1843. Due to frequent flooding, a church made of stone was initiated by the first Parish Priest Father Damaso Mojica, in cooperation of the town’s Prinsipales under the leadership of Gobernadorcillo Juan Dimayuga. The building of the church and convent was enforced by Superor Decree, August 10, 1855. The ruins found in this place are the remains of that said church. A new church was built in the current Town of San Juan, 1890.

This marker was agreed upon by Resolution Number 2 Series of 1994 by the National Historical Commission.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Cubao

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral (also known as Cubao Cathedral) is located in Quezon City, Metro Manila. It was built in 1950 by the Society of the Divine Word and belongs to them until 1990 when the Archdiocese of Manila took over its administration. When the Diocese of Cubao was erected, it became the Immaculate Conception Cathedral (2003).

After visiting Our Lady of the Abandoned in Marikina and the Monasterio de Sta Clara in Katipunan, I rode the LRT Line 2 from Katipunan Station to Betty Go-Belmonte Station. Then I walk towards the direction of Cubao about 2 blocks. I rode a jeep going to Fairview and drop off to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. It’s one of the most beautiful churches I’ve visited so far. I’m surprised that all these time I’ve been passing by Cubao; I haven’t been to this church before.

Widening of C6 Road

It’s been a while since we visited the Napindan Bridge in C6 Road, Taguig City. There are a lot of constructions going around the Napindan Bridge. The former marsh land was reclaimed and I have no idea what will be constructed there.

I also noticed that C6 Road, Taguig is being widened. Two lanes are being added and I guess it will go passed the Napindan Bridge up to Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City probably all the way up to Taytay, Rizal. This is great news especially for those travelling from Taguig City to Taytay, Rizal. I sure hope the contractor will finish this project in December 3, 2016 as posted.

Construction/Concreting of Additional Two Lanes at C6 from Napindan to M.L. Quezon Taguig (Phase I) 2nd LD Taguig City

Travel by Foot

Ever since I got my DSLR in December 2011, I tried my best to travel as much as possible. DSLR and travelling goes hand in hand. I’m not earning much at the call center, and I don’t have a car so I do my travel mostly by foot and using public transportation. My favorite part is travelling by jeep. You can go town to town by riding the jeep which always stops at the Poblacion or Town Center (where the Parish Church, Municipal Hall and public market is usually located).

My most recent travel was with my photography club and we went to San Juan, Batangas.

Five years of travelling and I have so much more to visit – so many towns and provinces to go. When I travel to new places, I always make it a point to take pictures of the church, town hall and market. I also tried to take pictures of the local food, their version of the jeep or tricycle and the local trade or industry. I also try to visit town fiestas as much as I can and to join out-of-trips either from coworkers at the call center or at the photography club.

In the entire travel trip I had the opportunity to experience, some of the things I learned are to wear light shirts (that seems to have ventilation holes) and comfortable shoes. I love walking around the city to take pictures up close and also as a form of exercise.

Lately I’ve been looking for good brands of travel shoes and someone introduced me to Mizuno. They’re known for running shoes but I guess it won’t hurt to use it as travel shoes as well. Mizuno has been one of the brands that make good quality running shoes. Who knows, I might also end up as an indie runner like Leo Kevin Mendiola.

We had a Visita Iglesia in Pampanga for 1 day. My friend saw this church (Sta Rita) on ANC and we decided to travel this church and nearby churches by foot and via jeep.

We visited Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan last year. This resort is huge and you really have to prepare your legs for a lot of walking. Bring comfortable shoes.

Our Lady of the Abandoned, Marikina City

I’ve been visiting Marikina City for more than 8 years now, ever since I was asked to be a ninong of a wonderful boy. Every Christmas season, I would visit Marikina City to visit my inaanak to bring gifts but I never thought of visiting its main church. My inaanak resides near the Concepcion Church, which I already visited, but it was just recently that I visited the Our Lady of the Abandoned Church (Dambana ng Ina ng mga Walang Mag-ampon) in downtown Marikina City.

I’m surprised that it’s walking distance from the Sports Center (where the jeepney station is located) and that the Pasig-Marikina jeep passes by this wonderful church. I never noticed this church in all those years that I’ve been visiting Marikina City. I’m glad that I decided one day to look for this church. Lately, I’ve been visiting churches in Metro Manila.
