Araw ng Pasig 2015 in Pictures

Three years ago, I attended the Araw ng Pasig Celebration (439th Founding Day), and I was disappointed by the Grand Parade – how it’s full of government employees and appears to be an Alay Lakad.

A few hours ago, I attended the Araw ng Pasig 2015 (442nd Founding Day) and it’s even a longer line of people. It’s still as boring as ever and it’s like watching a procession of a famous dead person (on his way to the cemetery).

There are very few bands playing, very few people dancing, and definitely a lot of Pasig City employees doing an Alay Lakad in their uniform (which is mostly in blue and red). I don’t know if these people are obliged to attend this every year.

After the government employees, it’s another wave of people – from the different elementary and high schools in Pasig City. The only float that I saw (that’s unique from the sea of people) was from Bagong Ilog. They have a replica of a boat with an image of the Virgin Mary.

How do we expect tourists from other parts of Metro Manila (and the Philippines) to go all the way here in Pasig City during the City’s founding anniversary, when all they would see, in the Grand Parade, are government employees?

The Tourism Office of Pasig (if such entity exists) should really consider modifying the Grand Parade. I'm sure I'm not the only one saying it’s boring, senseless and doesn’t help in the tourism drive of Pasig.

[Edit: There is a Facebook page for Pasig City Cultural Affairs and Tourism Office. I also posted a link to this blog post. I hope they’ll listen.]

Children’s Golden Show (440th Araw ng Pasig Celebration)

I attended one of the activities of the 440th Araw ng Pasig Celebration called “Children’s Golden Show”. Around 4:00 PM yesterday, July 2, 2013, a circus show for children was held at Plaza Rizal besides the Pasig City Museum.

Children’s Golden Show – part of the celebration of the 440th Araw ng Pasig.

The circus show was performed by a juggler and a magician. The juggler was also the unicyclist and also performed the balancing acts. The highlight of his performance was balancing on top of 2 set of planks supported by drinking glass with a small barrel in between. That was pretty impressive.

The magician was also the puppeteer (specifically, a ventriloquist). He performed the usual appearance of doves and flowers from his hands, as well as colorful handkerchiefs and guessing-the-card game. His impressive acts include making his lady assistant float on top of a sword and making her disappear inside a giant Rubik cube.

The emcee of the show was Noel Rivera (curator of Pasig City Museum). Newly-elected Pasig City Mayor Maribel Eusebio was there during the show. She was accompanied by her husband, former Pasig City Mayor Bobby Eusebio and their son.

The spectators of the show were mostly children from Bahay Aruga and Bahay Pag-Asa. Students of STI-Shaw were also there to watch the show (which seems to be compulsory for them since they’re passing around a sheet of paper for attendance). A similar attendance sheet was also signed by the parents of the children.

The Children’s Golden Show is complete with balloons and party hats for the kids. However, it could have been better if they added at least a cotton candy and ice cream booth to complete the setting. We’ve been there at Plaza Rizal from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM but I didn’t see any food served to the starving children.

The presence of Mayor Maribel Eusebio was good for the show but it could have been better if she watched the show instead of navigating her iPad the whole time. It’s a non-working day in Pasig City anyway. Also, the First Family could have posed for the camera with the children before leaving the area. They silently sneaked out of the venue without waiting for the fireworks display.

Overall, the Children’s Gold Show is a great event for the kids. I hope the Pasig City Government could do this more than once a year. They could probably have a roaming Circus Show for less fortunate children of Pasig City more often.

Red is the color of the day. Still part of politics? Is this the reason why Vice-Mayor Iyo Bernardo didn’t attend the event because he’s known for his yellow signature shirt?

He doesn’t enjoy dancing – at all.

The balloon-maker. Nice hat!

The girl is asking for balloons. Oopss… sorry for the “cut” head.

IMG_2739

Students of STI-Shaw. Are you here for the event on your own or was it compulsory? Just asking.

The juggler and unicyclist. How much is his talent fee? He’s great!

At last, the new Mayor is here. The show can begin now.

He’s very good at his balancing act. I wonder what’s his name.

That must have hurt on her back.

The First Family, Mayor Maribel Eusebio and Bobby Eusebio, together with their son. Our Mayor is very busy even on a non-working holiday. Just my opinion.
