Flag Days 2014: May 28-June 12

Flag Days 2014

Today starts the Flag Days 2014. It will last until our Independence Day 2014 (June 12). I really thought that the Philippine Flag was first used during June 12, 1898 but according to the Official Gazette:

“116 years ago, on May 28, 1898, the Philippine flag was first unfurled in Alapan, Imus, Cavite”

Long live the Philippines! Mabuhay!

Food Photography Practice

I got a tip from a photographer about taking pictures of food. He advised me not to take a top view of the food but instead take a closer shot of the food to make it more enticing to the viewers.

I began doing so when we ate at Kamay Kainan and during our most recent team building at Torres Ville in Antipolo City. These are the food we cooked during our dinner and breakfast. Actually it was our Team Leader (TL) who cooked our breakfast. Yes, all of our breakfast!

I hope you like these pictures. Please let me know if the tip I got from that photographer is effective.

Kamay Kainan, Market! Market!

My friends and I recently had an all-you-can-eat (or in Filipinism, eat-all-you-can) session at Kamay Kainan at Market! Market!, Taguig City.

The flyer of Kamay Kainan listed down their menu:

Soup – Corn Soup, Sotanghon Soup, Mushroom Soup, Asparagus

Sizzlers – Pork Sisig

Main Dish – Chicken Curry, Bopis, Adobong Baboy, Pata Paksiw, Chicken Liver Gizzard, Binagoongang Baboy, Kalderetang Baka, Ginataang Kohol, Tinolang Manok, Halaan, Kare-Kare, Papaitan, Nilagang Baka, Sinigang na Baboy, Dinuguan, Inihaw na Baboy, Inihaw na Tilapia, Breaded Porkchop, Lumpiang Shanghai, Crispy Chicken, Pusit Calamares, Linasing (Nilasing) na Hipon, Fresh Lumpia, Lumpiang Togue, Sinigang na Hipon, Sigang Ulo ng Lapu-Lapu sa Miso, Tahong, Baked Tahong, Tokwa’t-Baboy

Vegetables – Chopsuey, Pinakbet, Ginataang Langka

Rice – Garlic Rice, Fried Rice, Plain Rice

Dessert – Ensaladang Manga, Fruits in Season, Gelatin, Buko Pandan, Ice Cream, Fruit Salad, Ginataang Halo-Halo, Minatamis na Saging, Brownies

The price of the buffet is P289.16 per head plus P49.06 (Bottomless Iced Tea) for a total of P338.22/head. We were four in our group and it only cost me P1,352.88 (VAT inclusive), my treat. Kamay Kamayan in Market! Market! doesn’t charge any service fee so I gave them a small tip.

Two of us in our group are not into Pork so we have a very limited choice of food but we eventually tasted almost all the non-pork dishes. I only had 3 plates (desserts included).

This all-you-can-eat session also was our time to practice our passion for food photography. I brought my Canon digital camera while one of them brought his Nikon DSLR. I was so envious of his camera but I’m glad I had a handy camera. Anyway, here are some of the foods that we ate:

My Other Auntie’s Balikbayan Box

The spirit of Christmas and gift-giving is really in the air. Our aunt from California recently sent us balikbayan boxes full of canned goods. This time, it’s our aunt from Chicago who sent us another balikbayan box. I thank them for their generosity and kindness. They’ve been doing this thing for the past 36 years (even before I was born).

I was actually expecting SPAM in the package but she sent us a different brand (SPAM is still more delicious). The brand name is Brookedale and it’s probably the best brand of luncheon meat in Chicago. Anyway, here are the other brands and items that she sent us:

In the pictures: Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Celebrity Ham, Hormel Chili, Happy Harvest, Kirkland Daily Multi-Vitamins and Minerals, Southgate Chili with Beans, Brookdale Vienna Sausage, Brookedale Luncheon Meat, Mama Cazz Spaghetti Sauce, Chef’s Cupboard Chicken Noodles, Kroger Corned Beef, among others.

Pacquiao vs. Marquez III: Pacquiao Wins!

Manny-Pacquiao-vs-Juan-Manuel-Marquez-Replay-and-Highlights

I’m not a big fan of Manny Pacquiao and of boxing. However, since he’s Filipino and he’s promoting the country through boxing, I admire him for that. I admire Manny Pacquiao’s determination and discipline when it comes to his craft: boxing. I believe that whatever career or job we have, we should give our 100% commitment to it, just like Pacquiao.

I’m not watching the live streaming (because I don’t know that URL it is being shown) but I’m reading the live blog broadcast from Yahoo! Philippines. I do hope Manny Pacquiao wins so that the Philippines would at least be a headline in international websites and newspapers.

1:48 Christian Brazil Bautista: Pacquiao wins!

1:48 Joey Alarilla, Yahoo! SEA: After 12 rounds, judges 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112 to winner by majority decision and still champ, Manny Pacquiao

Congratulations Manny Pacquiao! You’re truly a champion!
