San Felipe Neri Parish Church, Mandaluyong City

There is an old church along Boni Avenue in Madaluyong City. It’s the Parish of San Felipe Neri (Saint Philip Neri). I visited it a few months ago and it’s only now that I’m uploading the pictures. Unfortunately, the church was closed when I visited it that’s why I don’t have interiror shots of the church. I guess I was in Kalentong, Mandaluyong when I decided to visit this church. I can’t remember what route of jeepney I rode to go here.

Accoridng to Wikipedia, St. Philip Romolo Neri (Italian: Filippo Romolo Neri; 21 July 1515 – 25 May 1595), known as the Third Apostle of Rome, after Saints Peter and Paul, was an Italian priest noted for founding a society of secular clergy called the Congregation of the Oratory. Philip Neri is one of the influential figures of the Counter-Reformation, and noted for converting to personal holiness many of the influential people within the Church itself.

 

On the façade of the church, there is a marker that reads:

Sa ngalan ng Panginoon, paggunita sa ika-100 taon Centenario ng pagkakatatag ng Parokya San Felipe Neri. Unang Kura Paroko 1863 – Rev. P. Francisco Gimenez. Kasalukuyang Kura Paroko 1963 Rev. P. Pantaleon L. de Guzman. Ang ala-alang ito ay buong pusong inihahandog ng bayang Mandaluyong, Rizal sa kanyang kabunyian, Rufino J. Card. Santos Arsobispo ng Maynila, Ika-2 ng Disyembre, 1963. Luwalhati sa Diyos at sa Kapurihan ng Birheng Maria Ina ng Diyos

My rough translation:

In the name of the Lord, commemorating the 100^th year Centennial of the foundation of St. Philip Neri Parish Church. First Parish Priest 1863 – Rev. Father Francisco Gimenez. Present Parish Priest 1963 Rev. Father Pantaleon L. de Guzman. This memory (or marker) is whole-heartedly dedicated by the town of Mandaluyong, Rizal Province in his Eminence Rufino J. Card. Santos, Archbishop of Manila, December 2, 1963. Glory to God and to the honor of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

There’s another marker that reads:

On this 1^st day of December 2013 on the 1^st year of the Pontificate of Pope Francis with his Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, D.D. as the 32^nd Archbishop of Manila with Rev. Msgr. Mario D. Enriquez as Pastor, this Church and its altar were dedicated to the Triune God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen

This marker bears testament to the historic occasion of the 150^th year of establishment of San Felipe Neri Parish and symbolizes our gratitude to God and to God’s People for their generosity.

Update: Sta. Clara de Montefalco Parish Church, Pasig City

I first time I took pictures of the Sta. Clara de Montefalco Parish Church in C. Raymundo Avenue, Pasig City back in April 2013. Back then, there are still no stained glass on its window frames, just G.I. sheets. Inside, tarpaulin prints of the pictures to be depicted are hang instead. Recently when I re-visited this church, the stained glass windows are complete and it’s very beautiful.

Sto. Rosario Church, Pasig City

I live in Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City and I work in Tera Tower, Bridgetowne, Libis, Quezon City. My mode of transportation is commute using tricyle and jeep. From Pinagbuhatan, I will ride a tricycle to Pasig Mega Market (Pasig Palengke) for P12. Then I will ride any jeep that goes to Angono, Binangonan and Taytay area. I will drop by at Tramo area of the Ortigas Avenue. From there, I will cross the road via overpass to the BDO and Metrobank side. From there, I will ride another jeep going to either Cubao or Crossing. Both routes would pass by the Iglesia ni Cristo besides the Bridgetowne.

I would always passed by the Sto. Rosario Church in Pasig City whenever I go to work. From work, I seldom pass by this church going home because I would simply walk from the Tera Tower and cross the bridge. I would then ride jeep going to Pasig Palengke via Tramo. However, during rainy season or morning rush hour, sometimes I would walk from the Rosario area all the way to BDO and Metrobank in Tramo passing by the Sto. Rosario Church.

In my almost 1.5 years working in Tera Tower, Bridgetowne, I visited the Sto. Rosario Church just once… just to take pictures. It’s not something out of the ordinary but it’s quite a landmark in Sto. Rosario, Pasig. It’s a regular chapel that has a very short area between the gate and the entrance to the church that is why I can’t take a better picture of the façade of the church. The Jesus de la Peña Chapel, Marikina City

There’s this small but old chapel in Marikina City that I just discovered last year. It is right across the Marikina River and it’s known as the Jesús dela Peña Chapel (or San Isidro Labrador Church as per Wikipedia). It may look like an old chapel but its significance is the first mass held here in 1630 making it the oldest church in Marikina City.

It has 2 markers that reads:

Unang Misa sa Baryo ng Jesus de la Peña

Sa dating kinatatayuan ng isang bodega na kinatitirikan ngayon ng simbahang ito ay ginanap ang unang misa noong Abril 16, 1630, sa kapahintulutan ni Padre Pedro de Arce, Obispo ng Maynila. Ang misa ay ginanap ng mga misyonerong Heswita na nakatuklas sa imahen ni Cristo sa isang talampas at sinamba sa buong bayan ng Jesus de la Peña na ngayon ay isang baryo ng Marikina.

The Council for the Repair (Restoration) of the Chapel of Jesus de la Pena, in it’s desire to make the chapel more pleasant and appealing to the youth and citizen of Jesus de la Pena, tried to initiate the repair of this chapel on March 7, 1988 and was finished in June 19, 1988.

First Mass in the Barrio of Jesus de la Pena

The first mass was held here in April 16, 1630 in the previously occupied warehouse that is currently this church, with the permission of Father Pedro de Arce, Bishop of Manila. The mass was held by Jesuit Missionaries who discovered the image of Christ in a plateau and worshipped by the whole town of Jesus de la Pena which is currently a barrio of Marikina.
